Annie Oakley is probably one of the best known female legends of the American wild-West. Born into a Quaker family on the 13 August 1860 and christened Phoebe Ann Mosey, Annie was one of six children. Annie’s early life was not without its tribulations. In 1870, at the age of ten, she was taken in by a local family to help care for their child, in return for which she was promised an education and a regular weekly payment of 50 cents. However, for the following two years Annie records that she was subjected to physical and mental abuse at the hands of these people, before returning to live with her family in 1872.
