Article excerpt: Media freedom is something that people and
organisations in western democracies take for granted.
However, such freedom is not available in many other areas
of the world, particularly those that are governed by
oppressive regimes. In the past the media in Pakistan
has suffered from restriction of freedom, due mainly to the
fact that, since independence in 1947, the country has been
subjected by a number of dictatorial political regimes.
