The Private Finance Initiative was designed to transfer part of the financial risk of projects from the public to private sector. However, they have not always proved successful. This essay examines the causal factors of a project failure. the Skye Bridge.

Originally, the construction, development and post completion management of the Skye bridge was contracted for a period of 27 years. However, due to continuing issues and controversy surrounding the project, the Scottish Executive terminated the contract in under ten years and returned the bridge to public ownership. A subsequent enquiry highlighted number of issues that had caused the failure of the project.
