During the past few decades, the pharmaceutical industry has witnessed significant growth as a result of increased globalisation and the demand for new and innovative products, mainly those focused on the healthcare sector. As a consequence of this growth, there have been continuing changes to the internal and external structures of organisations operating within this industry sector, as firms have endeavoured to sustain and grow their national and international market position and meet the unprecedented levels of demand. These changes have led to the restructuring of the pharmaceutical industry, mainly through the process of mergers and acquisitions
